Berkeley Springs earned its listing among America's 100 best small art
towns and as #12 of America's top art destinations with its community
of noted artists and active arts council. Located in Morgan County, WV,
the town is abundant with galleries, craft shops, community theater,
professional performances, art exhibitions at the Ice House, and summer
concerts in the park to round out the list of attractions. Members of
the area arts community are showcased in galleries and shops around
town. A Depression-era movie theater, weekly jam sessions, and musical
concerts tempt those tired of chirping tree frogs as entertainment. Two
collections of short stories set in Morgan County and written by local
writers are available for sale in the Visitors Center.
The official arts council of Morgan County, MAC,
has more than 450 individual and family members. MAC is governed by an
elected board of artists and business people and staffed by a
professional arts administrator. A corps of dedicated volunteers work
in all areas, from booking artists to curating gallery shows to
staffing the box office at concerts and plays. New volunteers are
always welcome.
The following are two
articles written by Jeanne Mozier about the town of Berkeley Springs
and it's position in the art community.
